In Honor of Memorial Day: Family Tree

Today I've spent a large portion of my day researching my family history. I use to do this all the time. I'd get info on one ancestor, that opened up more information on another ancestor and before I knew it I had 20+ new people on my family tree. I just love that!

Ancestry.com gives you the option to pay for their service, but there are plenty of free websites also. Find A Grave.com is a great service. I've been comparing Find A Grave's information to my info on Ancestry.

Since today is Memorial day, I think it's fitting that I found a lot of war veterans in my family tree.

The Smiley Family was awarded an armorial ensign, by the Crown of England, based upon the courage exhibited by Thomas in battle. The motto translates as "Valor in Arms" or "Virtue with Power".
The first war vet I found today began with Thomas Smiley, my 9th Great Grandfather.
Birth 1660 in South Lanarkshire, Scotland
Death 1689 in Londonderry County Londonderry, Northern Ireland
Thomas was a Williamite Defender during the Siege of Derry.  He died during battle and was awarded an armorial ensign by the Crown of England. Thomas had three sons - William, John (My 8th g-grandfather), and Francis - who sailed to America and served in the Revolutionary War.

Of course I found a lot of weird, funny, and sat facts as well. For one, couldn't they think of other names besides William, John, Francis, and Mary? When they did think of unique names, could they not think of something better - Archibald?! Really?

Then there are the infant deaths. So sad. :( Of course there's the large families. Two brothers had 9 children each.

And the discoveries that they were a bit naughty, such as a birth less than 9 months after the marriage. Hello hanky panky. ;)

I found a few who married their 1st cousins. That was pretty common really but the website always alerts you when that happens.

Anyway, as I was going through this info and adding it in I began to wonder, in 100 years, is my descendants going to be adding facts about my life and death and wonder what kind of person I was? Because of this blog and other social media, will it be possible to actually get to know me through Youtube, Facebook and other media outlets? What will they think? Once digital information is out there it is rarely lost. Unless some mass deletion or apocalypses that crashes the entire Internet, I think what we put out there will (or at least could) last many lifetimes. Perhaps I'll make a video talking to my descendants and tell them a bit about me, and what I want to manifest that will change their way of life.

Have you created your family tree?

Have a wonderful Memorial Day everyone!

Lighting a candle for Newtown, Connecticut

I'm lighting a candle for those who have been affected by the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. I'm sure you've probably already heard of it. Right now the news is reporting 27 people dead including 18 children.

As a parent I cannot fathom what these parents and children are going through. I'm so glad my children are home safe and sound and DD is home schooled! This is one of my worst fears.

Blessings, love and light to all those families in Connecticut.

Thank you veterans and their families for the sacrifices made. May the Lord and Lady bless you all.

Have a wonderful Memorial day.

One Step Forward, Two Back

I feel like a Yo-yo. Just when I think I am finally crawling out of this hole something happens to push me back down. I announced a week ago that I had a new job. I was feeling pretty good about it. I was told it was a data entry position. I was informed that I'd have some data gathering responsibilities that would require me to enter the manufacturing facility. When I told the staffing agency that I have Plantar Fisciitis Inflammation and that I can't be on my feet for long they said no problem. I wouldn't be on my feet longer than 2 hrs at a time to gather data. That amount of time would cause my feet to become a little sore, but not debilitating.

I suppose after the staffing company sent me to two interviews for a clerical position and it turned out to be a factory job that I shouldn't be surprised that the description for this job was completely wrong.

But let me back up for a minute. At 5 am this morning I woke up feeling great. At last a job to help move us out of MIL's home and get us off assistance. I took my shower and did a quick Water meditation , ate breakfast, breastfed my son, and said goodbye to my family.
As I was driving out of the parking lot I see a nice fury bunny hopping out of my way. I smiled and thanked the bunny for reminding me of Spring and new beginnings. That moment was unfortunately the happiest moment of my day.

I arrive at work only to be informed that they don't have a working computer for me. The one they have is broken. I basically shadowed the other worker who does the same job all day long. Which was fine, it was a learning experience after all. However one of the very first thing my boss informs me of is that the staffing agency always tells people its a data entry job. While there is some data entry, it is far from a "data entry job". Most of the job entails walking the whole day in the manufacturing plant gathering data, learning how each station does their job and then writing directions on how the job is done for their instruction booklets. Pictures of parts are taken so it guides the user should a reference be needed. Its relatively easy once you have the information you need. But my feet just won't let me walk that much all day long. The data entry part maybe takes up an hour of my time a day. And that isn't at one sitting. Its 20 minutes here, another 30 there.

I stuck out the day, but by the end I could barely walk and I couldn't keep up with my trainer. She was having to slow her pace to wait for me which isn't fair to her.

When I got home I hugged my husband, picked my baby up and gave him a kiss and then told them I can't do it. I was trying to talk myself into at least sticking out 3 days, which is my normal time I give any job before I decide if I like it or not. But I had my doubts I could stand the 3 days. The decision was taken out of my hands when the staffing agency called some 30 minutes later and informed me that the client called and didn't want me to return because they couldn't accommodate my needs [In regards to me not being able to stand long hours].

I just feel like a complete failure. I hate to tell MIL I was fired the same day. I don't want to disappoint her. I know its not technically my fault.  I did inform them of my restrictions. But that doesn't make it OK to me. I wish I could have done the job.

Its for the best they called to fire me, but dammit when are we going to get a break?! I hate being on assistance and it seems like the system is set up to keep you on it. I'm thinking about maybe going back to school. I'll call around and see where the closest campus are nearby and see what I could major in. Whatever it is, it will have to require I be able to sit!

P.S., I was very proud of me. I asked my boss where I could pump breast milk and she told me she'd show me the bathroom. I immediately told her that would not do because it is unsanitary. She blinked, then understood and we figured out a better place. I pumped 4 oz today. Wyatt still won't drink from a bottle or sippy but will eat oatmeal and mashed potatoes all day long. So his milk just goes into his food. He was very happy to see momma when I got home and we had some extra snuggle time.

P.P.S., I came home to find that my brother-in-law brought his little baby over. You can really tell that Wyatt and little Joe are cousins. They look almost identical. And my husband is a very smart man, but give him a camera and he'll take 4 short videos before he figures out that he has to change the settings! lol You can hear him saying, "Why didn't it flash!". Um, because your taking a video silly man! Hehe.

PBP: Yule & Family

Prompt: Winter Holidays and Family

This time of year, there are many different celebrations going on, most often ones that bring family close together. While it can be nice to see everyone again, it can also be stressful, when your family doesn't feel the same way about things as you do.

So, how do you deal with them? Do you simply avoid all talk of religion, even though the holidays can be very religious? Or perhaps it's just easier to avoid family all together....

If your family actually believes as you do, then perhaps these holiday gatherings aren't tough at all. Please, share with us how your Pagan winter family gathering go...

So my family is not all that religious. Though if asked they will tell you they are Christian. I think the only one that regularly goes to church is my Aunts and Grandmother. And I'm not on speaking terms with them. I have a live and let live approach. I avoid talk of the religious aspect of the season, and I let them pretend I'm celebrating Christmas. I just try to keep it as outwardly secular as much as I can.

My baby has Superpowers

It never fails. Sometime between 12 am and 3 am I think it's safe to assume little man has been sleeping long enough to say he's in a deep sleep. I fix my covers, grab my pillows (I have several. Must have pillow support!) and I settle down to get some much needed sleep. That's when I hear the tell tale whimpers from the crib. I begin to pray that those whimpers cease or better yet are my imagination, but usually no such luck. I swear he has mommy radar.

So I get up to fetch my baby, grab my drink and tonight I added a cookie to my routine just because I deserve it. Guess I won't be getting much sleep again. Luckily breast feeding my little man usually knocks him out again, if only temporarily. If tonight goes anything like the previous week, as soon as I put him in his crib again he'll wake right back up. Sleeping on my chest seems to be the only way he and I can get some sleep. Co-sleeping has its advantages, but I can never be comfortable or get a good nights rest while I know he's right there with me.

Well blogger fans, if your sleeping have some good dreams for me.

On another note, this is my 200th Post. Woohoo!

And here's little man having some laughs with daddy. Wyatt is saying Dad more often too. Sorry the quality isn't the greatest, I think I need a new camera.

Mortality

Death is no more than passing from one room into another.
Helen Keller

This week I can't help but to think of my own mortality. My mother came close to leaving this world on Thanksgiving, and it's really brought home that I'm not a kid or young adult anymore. We can leave this world at any time. Our actions or inactions will decide our fate.

Death to me is just a transition to a new place. I neither aim for it, nor wish to avoid it at all costs. It simply is. That said, I don't believe on putting the peddle to the metal and speeding toward it. Yet, isn't that what my mother has done by living an unhealthy lifestyle for 60 years? She's ate what she wants, however much she wants her entire life. And that has led to two heart attacks on her 60th birthday. She is healing btw, but we still do not know how much damage to her heart was done.

I certainly don't want to spend my 60th birthday in the hospital fighting for my life. Yet, what am I willing to do to avoid it? Well I need to go back on the diet I started last year. And somehow work in an exercise routine. It would help tremendously if I had my own space! That way I could control what kind of foods are in the household and how the food is prepared. Here there is a table with way too much temptation and loading foods with fat is just how it's "suppose" to be. It's hearty food and delicious. It's just way too tempting to pile a lot of food on our plates and gorge oneself.

And then we come to our activity, or lack thereof. I am self conscious of exercising with people present. I've tried before and I'm just too shy. I always feel like people are judging me. That's why I liked when I joined Curves last year because IF there were people there, it was all women with "real" bodies. Not stick thin or beefed up with muscle's like some other gyms. Most of the time though I could time my visits where the area was mine alone. I went in, sweat my bottom off, and left with none there to witness. Maybe I can check into joining a YMCA or something. I thought about it before but I didn't have transportation.

I know one thing, if this week hasn't taught me anything else, it's that I don't want to be my mother.

30. Share or write a guided Samhain meditation.

A Samhain Guided Meditation
By: SalemWitchChild
Oct 23, 2011

Lets begin by sitting in a comfortable position. Breath in through your nose and out through your mouth. Become aware of each part of your body starting from your toes. Relax each muscle as you work your way up to your ankles, calves, knees, hops, arms, hands, fingers, shoulders, and neck.

See yourself sitting in your home next to a window. You look out that window and see a willow tree with a Raven sitting in its branches. The Raven calls to you and invites you to the other realm.

You walk outside and stand before the Raven and the willow tree. The Raven spreads his wings and the leaves of the tree transform into a shimmering doorway. This is the Samhain veil between worlds.

The Raven calls you to follow as he enters the veil; you follow.

On the other side you see the street of your childhood home. Ahead you see your ancestors are waiting for you outside of your home. Each have a message for you. Some just wish to be remembered, others have a message or advice to give. Listen to your ancestors and ask any questions you have now.

The Raven calls and awaits you at the door to the veil. It is time for you to give your thanks to your ancestors for their love and advice. You follow the Raven through the shimmering veil once again.

On the side of the living, you face the Raven and the willow tree and give thanks for their assistance. The Raven calls and promises to open the Samhain veil next year.

Begin coming aware of your breathing and your body. Move your neck, arms, hands, fingers, legs, and toes one by one. You become more aware of your surroundings and finally are awake. Remember each message your ancestors gave you. Write them down so that you may reflect upon their advice.

I hope you have had a wonderful visit with your ancestors.

Blessed Be

27. Samhain with the Kids

Samhain is right around the corner and that means its time for my favorite holiday! Every year I've taken off work for Halloween to prepare for Samhain. This year since I'm not working I won't need to do that. This year, money is tight so we won't be able to do our normal 2+ Jack o Lantern carvings. So I'm looking for some inexpensive ideas for Samhain.

For those readers not in the know. Samhain (pronounced SOW-in, SAH-vin, or SAM-hayne) is the last of three harvest festivals. Its celebrated traditionally between OCT 31st and NOV 1st. It is the second time each year where the veil between worlds is thinner and we are able to communicate with our dead (The first being Beltane). It is a time to honor The Crone and our ancestors.

Sierra (My daughter) and I love to carve pumpkins for Samhain to scare away unwelcome spirits! So every year I spend at least a good day online finding exciting (and free) carving patterns. Perhaps this year instead of mutilating real pumpkins, we'll make our jack o lanterns out of paper. Or maybe we can find some other materials around the house. Anything round like a jar or ball would work. Obviously for those options we wouldn't use any heat source to light it.

Sierra as a Witch
Another thing I've loved to do is come up with an inexpensive option for dressing Sierra up. Last year we bought a witches hat and a wig. She wore an old dress and went Trick or Treating as a witch. By far this was my most favorite costume and it only cost me $5. Unfortunately in the move to Ohio the hat had an untimely death. So we'll need to come up with something new this year. Or perhaps I can convince her to stay home and hand out candy to the younger kids. That would make me a happy momma!

As far as the Samhain ritual, we are going to join up with Inanna's Spiritual Center. I've talked Rev. Lynn to do a ritual at her center. There is a small group that wants it to happen at the center too so hopefully it will be a night of ritual and companionship. I can't wait! We are doing it on the 30th so everyone can go without our jobs (For those who have them) and school interfering.

I want to be a Gypsy

Living with my mother and then in March moved in with my MIL has gave me a whole new appreciation for MY household. I took it for granted before. I had forgot what it's like to live with other people and not be the "Top Mom" of the house. I keep looking on Craigslist at RV's for sale. There are a lot of them around here and for what your buying it's actually pretty cheap. Problem is we have two cars that wouldn't pull them.

I've told DH that I'd love to sell one car (IE The crappy car he bought earlier this year that I hate and wish he'd never bought), and try to get a truck to pull a camper with. DH has a collection of Kiss and Comic books that is well over 2K. Maybe we could find someone to trade.

I just really want out of this house and into our own space again. I think living like a Gypsy could be fun! Hell and maybe it would unplug us for a bit and get us into doing something more nature like. DH hates fishing and camping but I love it.

I see this as an inexpensive option but I think DH thinks I'm just joking. I'm really not! Though camping in winter might not be the best of options, it would certainly work!

What do you think? Doable solution or am I crazy?

16. What is your favorite Halloween Project(s) for the kids?

Projects for Samhain/Halloween can be made from items around the house. Have your kids collect some fallen leaves, use uncooked pasta, paper plates, food coloring and whatever else you have handy for the kids to create. One of the more simpler things to do is make a pentacle out of a paper plate, construction paper, and glue leaves around the outside. This makes a perfect decoration for your children's door. Gather twigs and make one for your front door instead of making the circle out of paper.

Another thing I like to do is a wishing cauldron. Fill a small cauldron or bowl with milk. Everyone gets a small piece of paper (sticky notes work well here). Everyone writes one wish and one thing they wish to let go of. A ritual is done and you can choose to either read your wishes aloud or just fold the paper and add to the cauldron. At end of ritual, dig a hole and consecrate the wishing cauldron's contents to Earth.

I'm sorry this is so short. I had a long sleepless night with my baby and mom is tired!

Remembering our Angel Baby

Source
In January of 2000 I had the happy pleasure of announcing that I was pregnant with our first child. However in March when I went for my second prenatal appointment the doctors discovered that my baby had no heartbeat and had died several weeks beforehand. My husband and I were devastated. I refused to believe they were telling me the truth. After all I had just heard the heartbeat a month before. Everything was going so well. I wasn't really sick and had only mild pregnancy symptoms which I would later attribute to loosing the baby for many years. Though I later learned no symptoms of pregnancy is not an indication of miscarriage.

Anyway, I refused to believe my doctor. So instead of letting them do a D&C right away, I made an appointment with another doctor for a second opinion. It was a Friday so I had to wait all weekend before I could get the second opinion. I had such high hopes that weekend. I had convinced myself they had to be wrong.

That following Monday I experienced mild cramping as I was getting ready to leave, but being the stubborn scorpio woman that I am, I refused to believe my baby was dead. As we were driving to Lexington our car broke down. This was in Versailles, KY and the road we were on is treacherousness if you are on the side of the road. Some kind construction workers picked us up and took us to the gas station where we could make a phone call. By then the cramping became worse and I admitted to myself that we wouldn't need to get a second opinion. That horrible moment where I told my husband that I was having a miscarriage is forever etched into my memory.

Versailles KY Cash Advance. Where I had a Miscarriage
While my husband made the phone call for his father to pick us up, I walked around the corner to the closest business. It happened to be a Cash Advance. The old lady there was kind enough to allow me to use her bathroom. She could tell something was wrong but I didn't tell her what.  To this day I really hate to look at this picture. This is where my baby exited my body, I was taken by ambulance to the hospital where a D&C was performed. I sat in shock, just hoping I was dreaming. Realistically there was no way to know if the baby would have been a boy or a girl. However to us, the baby would have been male, and named Seth Andrew.

As I sat in the hospital waiting to enter surgery, I meditated on why I was loosing the baby. Goddess let me know that the spirit attached to the baby wasn't ready to be born. But we were promised a year later we would have a baby. A year almost to the day, we learned we were expecting our daughter Sierra Belle. I'm at peace with loosing Seth. I know it was meant to be. But that doesn't make the pain of loss any less. He will always be apart of us.

Sierra 1 month old
This month on the 31st all witches and Wiccan's around the globe are celebrating Samhain, which is the 3rd harvest sabot and a time we honor our ancestors. All too often our babies are forgotten because they were with us such a short time when we honor our dead at Samhain. So this post is to remember that even if you never got to hold your little one, light a candle for your sweet babies. Now is the time to remember and honor them.
Blessings, Love, & Light

6. If your a parent, how do you involve your children in Samhain?

I've always believed in allowing children to choose whether to participate in religious observances or not. Last Samhain we spent the day with The Circle of the Blue Moon. Sierra had a good time playing with the children, doing little games and activities, and sitting around the fire. Every year we also make it our personal project to carve a pumpkin (Or two, or three). This year she has her pumpkin, and we'll carve it a few days before the 31st.

A few years ago I was on a "Learn to cook" kick. When I have time I try to expand my cooking knowledge. That year I learned how to cook a pumpkin pie from scratch, DD helped of course. I didn't even use the can pumpkin puree. Who knew those small pumpkins were for more than just display? *giggle*

Samhain. 2007
It came out great. At least I was told it was great. I actually hate the taste of pumpkin pie. But Sierra and DH didn't leave any extra so I suppose that's the best compliment a cook can get.

A pagan/witchy artwork.

I absolutely love the Goddess art of Jonathan Earl Bowser. His artwork just speaks to me. I could sit and look at it for ages and never tire of it! If I had the money I'd certainly buy a few originals. My all time favorite of course has to be Isis. She is so beautiful here and I love the colors of the sunset and the flowing gown and wings. Its so beautiful! His artwork reminds me of the PBS guy. You know the old hippy? Bob Ross was his name. I loved to watch him on Sunday mornings. While he was painting his "Happy little trees" I was waiting for my mother to pick me up, and bemoaning the fact that I had to leave my great granny. But we had a good time watching TV, sharing stories and just being together. So thinking of art makes me think of my great granny. I really miss her! I think she taught me a lot about how to be a parent. I wish I had all the stories memorized that she did. I slept in her bed when I visited and we would snuggle and she'd tell me little bedtime stories and fairy tales.

Sorry I got off track! That's OK though. :)

How do your close ones feel about your witchy path? Do they know? Why or why not?

For the most part they are pretty open to my path. DH is spiritual. He doesn't claim any religion but he's studied many. He marches to his own tune so to speak. He's most close to Native American Shamanism. He's taught me a lot over the years and without him I'm sure I wouldn't be the same me today.

My mother "claims" to be Christian, but honestly I have never saw her to step foot in a church. She does believe that you don't need a church to be a good Christian, nor do you need to dress in your "Sunday" best. She doesn't know a lot about Wicca, but once in awhile she gets curious and asks. Other than that, she doesn't really live her beliefs.

My father isn't in the picture, and the rest of my family I do not have contact with. Overall we are not a very tight nit family. We couldn't be in the same room without knock down fights happening.

DH family doesn't really say much either. They are also not very religious.

Pagan Parenting: My Way

I grew up in a "Christian Light" household. By that I mean my mother claimed she was Christian but never preached to us, never went to a church, and the only religious study she encouraged was to throw a children's bible at me on my 13th birthday and tell me to read it.

My grandparents were the opposite. They were very fundamental. You went to church on Sundays. Always had to dress up. Sunday school was suppose to be a weekly event. I remember the one and only time I went. I guess I asked a "dumb" question. I never went back. I don't remember what I asked now, but I remember what they were preaching didn't make much sense to me.

So as my daughter matures I've always let my daughter know that when she wishes to participate and learn about Wicca I will teach her. Similarly, I will help her learn other faiths as well. I feel it is important to learn about all major and some minor religions to have a better understanding of other cultures and people.
Last year my daughter participated in her first Full moon ceremony. I was so proud of her! She said her part when it came time and took her cues from the adults. She enjoyed it a lot. She also has worked with me when doing a spell and kept asking to "do it again". lol. For now she thinks its fun, but knows its not something that is to be played with. I've always told her what I believe in, and in no way do I expect her to follow me. But if that is her wish I would help guide her way.

Over the years I've had to protect her from other people. While I don't mind that she learns about other religions when she is older and doesn't believe everything she hears, in her younger years they are so impressionable. When she was a toddler I didn't speak much about our faith and when I did speak about it, I always reminded her that its what I believe and one day she would learn and make a choice about her faith. While she was young and too impressionable we dropped off the "Pagan radar". Mainly because I didn't want to be carrying around a toddler at festivals, but it served to isolate us from others. I feel that if they are young enough where just mentioning God means the child repeats, "I believe in God" then its too young.

Religion is a choice, not a birth right. I do not want my daughter to be Wiccan because I am. I want her to study and come to that conclusion (Or whatever faith she decides) herself.

Am I wrong in wanting to stay home?

To understand my story you need a little background information.
With my first child I was working as a Printer for a pet products company. Both DH and I worked together. After having my daughter I spent 4 weeks home but was forced to return to work because of money. I breast fed DD until I went back to work because the job required I work with chemicals that enters the blood through skin contact and therefore also milk.
Fast forward 10 years later and I feel like my husband has a better relationship with our daughter than I do. We really missed that bonding time. Yes you can bond in other ways but that didn't happen because DH was always the one to do most of the "work". Leaving me to do other household chores.

So now that our son is here, I've breast fed him for 3 months and its been wonderful. He and I are really bonded and I love it. He prefers me. My husband can't hold him long because Wyatt always cries. And Dh has arthritis now which makes it painful for him to hold Wyatt for a long time. Wyatt isn't happy most of the time unless he's getting attention or being held.

Because we are on government assistance right now, we are required to do a job requirement to recieve our benefits. I stayed in KY with my mother (Under horrible conditions while pregnant) and DH was suppose to get a job before I came to Ohio. That didn't happen. I finally had enough of those bad conditions and came to Ohio when I was 32 weeks pregnant. We are still living with MIL.

Dh has done "some" job searching. But most of the time he sits around the house and plays on the computer or watches tv or sleeps. He hasn't been doing the job search because he's bipolar and they are afraid he will "snap". He's been bipolar for a very long time. Now, he did freak out one time and he has some anxiety over finding a new job because of the way he was fired from his last job. However he's on medication now and it seems to be a little better. IMO he's just fine to go to work.

Wouldn't it make more sense for him to go so I can stay home and care for our children? He can't take care of the baby. Yet I'm about to be forced to satisfy the job requirement because Dh won't do it. I just want to scream. If I go to work I'd have to get someone else to babysit. I do NOT like strangers looking after my child. DH could take care of our daughter. She is 9 and basically can take care of herself. But he wouldn't be able to take care of Wyatt. And Wyatt refuses a bottle 99% of the time anyway. The only times he really will take a bottle is if he is absolutely starving!

I'm just really frustrated. I feel like DH just needs to man up and go get a job. Yet he thinks its better I do it. I've tried talking to him this morning. He didn't say anything though.

Happy Full Moon!

Harvest Moon
Its the Harvest moon and that means what seeds we have sown are coming to fruition. So what are your plans for celebrating this time? What are you waiting to come full circle in your life?

In January we began our journey of moving back home to Ohio. We have yet to settle ourselves into our new life. We are still waiting to come full circle. I hope as we enter the harvest time our life will change and settle.

My the Lord & Lady help us find the right job and housing so that we may lead a better life. And may our dog Kota be protected and loved while she is in my mothers care.

Blessings, Love & Light

One of my favorite things to do when I have the time is to open Youtube and find a good meditation song to listen to. This is often how I started my day until recently. With the birth of my son I'm normally busy nursing him so I haven't the time to be on the Internet. But while I could, finding songs at least 5 minutes long and appropriate to meditate to was pretty easy to do. Here is a favorite of mine.
I hope you enjoy!
