Witch Movies: Why I'm Not Mad

It seems some members of the Pagan community is up in arms over the new movie Beautiful Creatures and others like it. They think that these movies spread misinformation about Witches and Wiccans.

I can understand why they'd think that. Anyone whose been apart of the Pagan community for a short time can tell you that there is a lot of misinformation out there. Every Pagan has gotten stupid comments about green noses, pointy hats and eating children.

However, I rather like these movies and similar TV shows. (Charmed was my favorite!). That's because I don't see them as a representation of me. They are just fantasy. Werewolf movies do not represent wolves any more than vampire movies represent pasty white people.

I've used a picture of Maleficent here as a perfect example of a "bad witch" I like. Growing up I certainly didn't think she represented any group of people. Even at 7 years old, I knew she was just an awesome bit of fantasy.

I suppose I give more credit to people to critically think. I hope they can come to the realization that no, real Witches and other types of Pagans can't turn anyone into a toad, nor do we try.

Are you angry with movies that represent Witches and Wiccans negatively?

I'm glad to hear someone else say what I've been feeling. I DO think we need more movies that show witches as real people, but like you, I still enjoy a lot of what's out there.

On the other hand, the Biblical/Shakespearean version of witches led to the witch hunts and the torture/murder of many good witches and innocent people who weren't witches at all. Most of them were just guilty of being female. So our fictional portrayals are important in helping to shape public perception. For that reason, I do think it's very important that we have stories of good witches. Better yet, stories that show that witches are just people, and that magic is neither good or bad... it's shaped by the practitioner.

You have a good point. Though a blog is far from a TV show or Movie, that is why I write about my faith. To help dispel some of the myths surrounding us and help educate.

Blessings and Love to you,

No, because it's purely fiction, done to entertain. They're not documentaries! They're fantasy, horror, thrillers, dramas, comedies. People need to calm down. Do they get all huffy puffy over The Wizard of Oz? Get over yourselves people!

I'm annoyed by how many people get their panties in bunches, like when Hansel and Gretel came out. It's good movie. The only thing i was annoyed with was that it was set in Germany, but they didn't have German accents. Other than that, thumbs up from me. but some said that movie was going to make the crazies go on witch hunts. ::crosses eyes:: it's just fluffy nonsense to me.

You know Wizard of Oz always scared me as a kid. I think it was all the flying monkeys. I agree though it's not a documentary. If it were and portrayed us as evil, I'd be one of the first signing petitions and raising hell.
I get angry at any kind of art that represent characters who aren't "through to themselves." A world were all witches are a certain way is just ridiculous. I agree that our society could use more "realistic" witches in movies and books, but we are getting there...

There has been a little more variety in our generation than when our parents were our age. We're slowly getting there. You're right, maybe one day.
Some days I like to bitch about these kinds of things, but mostly I just think it's hilarious. (I also bitch about other logical gaps in stories.)

Everyone deserves a rant now and again. ;)
I have to admit I get a little put out with the way witches are presented in most movies. I try to keep in mind that society has been conditioned by major religions to view them in bad light. They can't see that there's anything wrong.
There is good and bad in all people. I just wish there would be more movies that show the whole truth.

I just finished watching Beautiful Creatures. To be fair they do say there is good and bad in all of us. So maybe that little tidbit of true info will be a stepping stone for someone to do more research.
