Moving Forward

At last! I can finally say we are moving forward. It's been a long hard road, but we are finally going to move out of my MIL's home. We just signed the lease today. We'll have to wait till DH's day off this Saturday to move. But I've been doing all of the paperwork and getting utilities in our name. We stayed and walked around the apartment for a bit and Sierra is in love with her room.

The bad news is that we have very little household items in our name. DH's aunt is giving us two love seats, one of them is a sleeper sofa. We have a table that Dh's PC can go on. Other than that, we don't have a lot and not a lot of money to buy things either. I've posted on Freecycle asking for some essentials. We also won't have Internet for a few weeks, so I'm sorry to say I won't be able to write on my own blog or indulge myself in reading your lovely blog posts. It's just a temporary hiatus though so I'll be back with fresh content and much happier for having my own space!

I'll leave you with this. It's my latest clay creation. They are Elder Futhark Runes. They are carved on both sides. I also will be working on a clay box for these to go in. Once I'm finished they will be going in my new Etsy store, Pagan Creation. I may also do a little something for a giveaway in October. So stay tuned for that!

So until next time, Blessings, love, and light to all.

Be Careful What You Witch For

So today I was thinking about an old spell I did and I thought it would be a good lesson to blog about. I am a healer and so it hurts me when I see those that I am closest to in pain. My husband is Bipolar as well as having various physical ailments. Several years ago I had the bright idea (I.E. stupid idea) to cast a spell helping to carry his burden of pain when it became too much for him. So I set my alter up, had my various healing herbs and candles and cast my spell. What followed was nothing. Or so I thought it was just another dud spell that didn't work the way I intended it to. Hey it happens to us all.

I worded my spell so that when my DH felt too overwhelmed and unable to go on that I'd "carry the burden". Meaning I'd feel his pain. I knew it probably wasn't the greatest idea I had, but just getting rid of his pain wasn't working. DH was convinced that the pain isn't suppose to go away and he's somehow meant to suffer. So I was desperate to help.

Over the weeks nothing happened and all was relatively normal. Then I noticed I began to get a little depressed. It was only for an hour or two and also coincided with DH first saying his head was too much, and then his moods leveling out and he'd mention he felt almost normal. During this time I'd become depressed, mad, and downright crazy. I didn't connect the two (Honestly I forgot about the spell by this time) till DH and I had our one and only fight that almost broke us up. Then I finally connected the dots I could see how subtle the spell was and how well it actually worked.

After explaining to my husband about the spell and why my head went a bit freaky, he insisted I reverse the spell and never do healing work for him again. I broke my cardinal rule. Never attempt a healing without permission, and never keep anyone's pain.

But if I had it all to do over again, I'd repeat my mistakes. Yes it almost cost me my marriage and made me seriously insane for awhile. But it also taught me a lot about energy healing and about what my husband feels every single day. I have more patience and empathy for him now that I know what it means when he says he's angry for no reason. That was a foreign concept to me before the spell.

So my lesson for today. Don't be afraid to make mistakes as long as you learn something from them. And its probably not a good idea to forget you cast for something, even if you think it didn't work. A week, or a month, or even a year later you might be pleasantly (or not so pleasantly) surprised.

Charging for Psychic Readings

Today I came across a negative comment about a psychic charging for her services. I know there is a lot of opinions about whether psychics are real and whether the ability to do psychic readings should be considered a gift or a service. This post is of course just my opinion, so your going to have to decide for yourself. Bottom line is this, no one forces you to get a psychic reading.

When you go to a psychic you should be completely aware that not all psychics are created equal. The "quality" of your reading will depend on several factors such as the psychics personal ability, training, and even what's going on in the readers life at the time. Many psychics find it difficult to do readings if they are ill or there is something distracting going on in their life. A good reader will recognize when they are not up to doing a good reading and refuse to provide this service until the problem is solved.

In regards to charging for a reading, many people when they see psychics charging automatically assume a psychic is just out to get your money and that their a charlatan. Well if they are charging hundreds of dollars this might be true. But let me ask you this, would you like to be charged for a service you provide? I'm sure you would. Psychics spend their time and energy to find the answers for you. They are just the conduit to the spirit world. That energy flow is exhausting, especially when the psychic is doing a psychic fair. Bottom line is its a service. One that you are not forced to buy. So if your against paying for a reading, don't. But don't automatically assume just because someone charges a small fee for a reading that they are frauds. At the very least consider it time spent with a friendly ear who is willing to let you vent your problems and weigh in on what you can do about it. You pay a lot more for a therapist!

Objections

"Nothing will ever be attempted if all possible objections must first be overcome."
- Samuel Johnson

This is something my husband does all the time and it drives me batty! He's someone who has to plan every possible outcome and if he sees something that goes wrong he'd rather not take the chance. Life is about chance! I'm not saying take chances that are likely to harm yourself or others, but a well calculated risk is worth the possibilities.

Spiritual Commitment

Over on The Deepest Well, bloggers are talking about spiritual commitment. The question is if you've converted to Paganism from another religion, have you done a commitment ceremony, and renounced your previous faith? Or do you do a mix/mash of both faiths?

Aine says, "The "way" we find is not always our own creation.
We are not always allowed to customize it. "

I disagree. I "label" myself as Eclectic Wiccan. The definition of Eclectic Wicca is
  • A group or solitary may use a blend of beliefs and practices from several different pantheons
  • and traditions.
  • A group could be an offshoot of an established tradition of Wicca, such as Gardnerian
  • orAlexandrian, but with modifications to their practice that make them no longer that
    • original tradition.
  • An individual may be creating his or her own tradition of beliefs and practices, and because
  •  this system can't be defined as something else, it can be defined as eclectic.
  • A solitary may be practicing what he or she has learned from publicly available sources on
  • Wicca, but not be using oathbound, initiatory material, and so recognizes that his or her practice is eclectic.

Now I never claimed another religion. I was lucky enough to grow up in a home where religion wasn't a "Birthright". Though I think my mother just assumed I'd be Christian, she never shoved it down my throat. Her version of teaching religion was throw a bible at me (literally) and say, "read this". I did read some of it, and most of it didn't sit well with me. However before I made the choice to label myself Eclectic Wiccan, I studied many different religions. My husband and other spiritual leaders in my life were instrumental in my education. In college I also took a theology class.

Most religions have at least a few things I agree with. I find it easy to incorporate portions of many religions into my own practice. One of my biggest disagreements with organized religion is that I felt boxed in. There seemed to be so many rigid practices. IMO, our perception influences our reality. For example, one person might believe sage should be used to cleanse a home. If you don't have sage some might rush out to buy some before they can do a cleansing ceremony. For me, If I don't have sage, I'll use tobacco or some other herb. As long as my perception of that herb is a cleansing scent/smoke then it will do the job I'm performing.

Aine says,
"They want a certificate, a title.  They have barely performed a
successful spell or seen on full turn of the wheel and suddenly
they are teaching others. "
Well that is true. Everyone, especially but not limited to Americans, want instant gratification. However I don't believe that a "newbie" to the craft is unable to teach others. Yes their experience is limited so they will not be able to teach as much as someone who has been dedicated to the craft most of their life. But what is teaching if not the practice of exchanging ideas? They can certainly share their experience and knowledge thus far. If they are setting themselves up as a "Know it all, been there and done that, Pagan, then they are misrepresenting themselves and should be avoided. I'm certainly not saying that someone who has just completed a year and a day of commitment to Wicca should go write a book or start their own coven.

I am saying that they can talk with family and friends about what they believe. If something they say influences or teaches the people they are in contact with something new, then all to the good. When I was first starting out one of my outlets was Yahoo Religion's chat. I certainly learned something new every day. I also taught a lot about my beliefs. The exchange of ideas is never wrong unless your misrepresenting the information as "The one truth" or more than you really know.

Aine says,
In my opinion, it's too easy to dedicate to something without
having to forfeit something else.  There is no risk, nothing to lose and because of this, it's too easy to commit.
For me, there was nothing to renounce before committing to Eclectic Wicca. But what a person has been in their past will always be with them. If they truly believe a portion of that path, then no amount of saying, "I renounce thee" is going to change it. My husband use to be a Sunday school teacher. He left Christianity when his church refused to marry his mother and step-father. (Mixed race marriage) Though he claims no religion, he'll tell you that what he believes closely resembles Native American Shamanism. That doesn't mean portions of the bible he once believed is totally unimportant now. Personally, I find most of the 10 commandments to be pretty good rules to live by.

In closing, I'd like to leave you with this quote.

"Stay committed to your decisions, but stay flexible in your approach." ~ Tom Robbins

3. What do I wish to teach people about Samhain?

Samhain (Pronounced Sow- in or Sam - Hayn) is the witches New Year. However some do not celebrate the New Year till Yule. Samhain is the last of the three Gaelic harvest festivals and a time to honor our ancestors. For this reason its often associated as the dark time. This does not mean evil. Wiccans recognize a balance in nature. Without light, you cannot have the dark and vice versa.

Samhain is often observed on October 31st - Nov 1st. Divination is performed to communicate with the dead since it is believed that the veil between the spirit world and our world is thinned during this time. Because of this thinned veil the spirits are known to return to their kin. To avoid unwanted spirits, everyone dresses up and begs door to door for treats so the spirits cannot tell who is alive and who isn't.

Many years ago I wrote a small marriage vow renewal for Samhain. With celebrating the New Year I feel it is appropriate to celebrate new life as well. So this is why I chose that time. Unfortunately we just never got around to doing it for some reason. I'll share what I wrote here. This is by no means a complete ritual. But as I've said before, I don't like sharing my complete plans. I feel you should do the rite yourself. If you have no experience in doing that, you need a mentor.

Vowel Renewal at Samhain

To open this circle I walk thrice about. No evil shall enter nor dwell about. (Said 3 times walking clockwise to open circle)

Aphrodite, Goddess of Love, I call to you now to bless this rite. Join us and be known.

(Corners called)

Ancestors, Listen to my call. I welcome you now to the circle I have drawn.
(Name ancestors)

Samhain is a time to honor our ancestors that have passed. But with death there is life. Which is why I have chosen this time to renew my love for you Lance. From the moment I met you I have loved you. These past __ years have been my dream manifested into reality. I renew those vows now and ask that Aphrodite bless our union with many more blissful years together.

(DH repeat or say own vows)

Aphrodite, Goddess of Love, I thank you for your blessing. May your gift remain in our hearts. Go now, and blessed be.

(Corners released)

To close this circle I walk thrice about. No evil shale remain nor dwell about. (Said 3 times walking counter clockwise to close circle)

The Journey (A Poem)

I wrote this while I was in college. Unfortunately I didn't stay on course. But a lot of things happened all at once to knock me off track. Maybe one day I'll get back on! But for now, I'd just like to share a bit of poetry.

The Journey
By Robin Carpenter
April 23, 2005

To stay on track is what I need.
Remember my goal and remember my dreams.

This journey will be a long road,
but I can make it through.

I must stay the course,
this is what I must do.

I will learn to adjust,
I will become like water.

I will soak up all the knowledge my teachers have to offer.

And I say again, this will be a long road.
But I will remember my dreams, and then I'll know.

My journey may be long,
but the rewards my goal.

Stay the course is what I must do.
For failure on this journey will just not do.

Stay the course is what I'll do.

2. What do I remember as most exciting about Samhain/Halloween as a child?

As a child Halloween was always my favorite holiday. It still is today. The most exciting thing for me then was getting to go TOTing with friends without parental supervision. It didn't happen often, so it was a treat. Of course this was a very small town and before there were razors in treats and other nasty illegal happenings going on. Every year I dressed up as a Witch or Gypsy (GO figure). I had about 5 friends that I regularly hung out with and we'd stick together as we walked all over town getting bags and bags of candy. We would have to come home and dump candy out and then go out for more. This was also before curfew as well. Stopping TOTing at 8pm was unheard of. By 8pm it was just getting good! Everyone also handed out candy and decorated their houses. Adults dressed up themselves. There were no streets that were dark and secluded. And if you dared to not hand out candy your house ended up with eggs and toilet paper on it! The whole town was lit up with orange and other various bright colors. I loved all the decorations!

...to know everything, and nothing at all.

First let me say that I have been studying and Practicing Eclectic Wicca for approximately 15 years. In that time I have learned a lot about Wicca and I like to pass on knowledge through various outlets; one being this blog.

Recently I was emailed this from The Pagan Village. It is so true and relates to my point, so I'll share it. The one that really struck home for me is "To be a witch is to know everything, and nothing at all." As we age and become The Wise Woman I feel its our duty to teach the younger generation when they ask and are ready for it. But we should never say to ourselves, "I am done learning". From the day you are born to the day you die, you will learn something new. This is the way of the universe. To not seek new knowledge locks you into one perspective that is narrow and stagnant. Our life must be a positive flow, so therefore we should welcome new perspectives. We don't have to change our beliefs, we just have to learn how others view the world.

Later tonight on the Everything Pagan Page, the admin told us about WitchSchool.com . So to put words to action, I have signed up. I'll be taking Herbalism which I've expressed an interest in learning previously, and Pagan Law which I think would just be good useful information. I'd like to take aromatherapy as well, but I have to be honest with myself and say I'm too busy at the moment. With these courses I'm already overbooked as far as time. I have a 4 month old to take care of, plus writing, and eventually I will need to get a job! Though I'm not looking forward to that day.

So, there you have it. What steps do you take to learn new things about Paganism?

New Banner & Grab button.

Hello Everyone! So I've been playing around in Gimp and came up with a new Banner and grab button for my blog. If you haven't already grabbed my button, do it now! Its on the right. :)

Tell me what you think about it. I worked hard doing it. I'm not the best at creative graphics but I think I did a pretty good job.

If you haven't already check out my 31 days of Samhain post. Please join in! I'd love to hear your thoughts on each topic.

I'm wrapping up the 44 days of Witchery. If you've been counting, I didn't do them all. Basically because I don't have much to say about the ones I left out, and I'd like to move on anyway.

I'm still working on my story for the All Hallows Grim blog Party. If you haven't joined in the fun, head on over to Pagan Culture and put your name on the list.

And now since I've been putting out at least one post a day (Sometimes more) I think tomorrow will be a little break for me.

Blessings, love and light all!

Flower of your choice, and its magical properties.

Roses is my most favorite flower. When we think of roses we think of relationships and love. Its our flower that says I love you, I'm sorry, and I still love you. It says I care about you.

Roses represent:

  • Passion
  • Luck
  • Healing
  • Ultimate Love
  • Psychic ability
  • Healing
Deities associated with this flower are:
  • Cupid
  • Demeter
  • Eros
  • Adonis
  • Hathor
  • Isis
Different flower colors have different meanings.

  • Red Rose- Romantic Love, Beauty, Courage, and Passion
  • White Rose - Purity, Reverence, Heavenly, Humility, Youthfulness and Innocence
  • Pink Rose - Appreciation, Grace, Admiration, Thankfulness
  • Yellow Rose - Joy, Friendship, Delight, Happiness
  • Orange Rose - Enthusiasm and Energy, Desire
The yellow rose is my mothers favorite
The Rose by Bette Midler is a favorite of mine and it makes me think of my mother and grandmother. I remember the day we heard that my grandmother, Minnie Lee Belle Smiley, had died. My mother and I were cleaning the house and one of her brothers showed up at our door to tell us she had died. I never really knew my grandmother, apart of my name is LaBelle, which is after Minnie. I've continued the tradition of having a form of Belle in my daughters name (Sierra Belle) in honor of Minnie. This song always reminds me of the love and sadness felt that day.

Something that I think people who don’t know much about paganism/witchcraft should know.

Generally those who are non-Pagan/Wiccan, don't know much about us at all. Most haven't even heard the term "Wiccan". Which honestly, is fine by me. Those who are curious and more open minded will seek the information for themselves. Which is why I enjoy doing educational articles on my blog and talking privately with people who approach me for information.

  • All the normal misconceptions come to mind such as we don't believe in a devil, therefore we aren't devil worshipers.
  • We don't believe in sacrifice.
  • We aren't Harry Potter wannabe's.
  • Spells/Magick/Prayer is energy work. The more good energy I put into my work, the more good energy that comes back to me eventually.

I try to stay positive. I am by no means perfect. I do have a temper and it sometimes gets the best of me. But I'm a pacifist at heart which goes well with the "Harm none" law. I think what most people don't realize is that Wicca is not just a religion, its a way of life. I'm like anyone else in that I have hopes, dreams, and worries. The difference is that I deal with those hopes, dreams, and worries in a different way because I live my life the Wiccan way. Which is at one with the Lord and Lady and all that they touch.

A favourite pagan/witchy movie.

I have to admit I am a total witchy movie liker (Yeah I'm making up words). I know they are fake, they give witchcraft and Paganism in general a bad name. But they are so fun!

My all time favorite witchy movie has to be the Harry Potter series. Its so thought out and filled with twists and turns. JK Rowling is one of my most favorite authors. So for a witchy movie, Harry Potter is at the top.

And then we have the other movies like Practical Magic, The Craft, and Race to Witch Mountain. All great movies. And who could forget Elphaba! As a kid I was afraid of the Wizard of Oz. I never wanted to watch it. But then the book, Wicked came out, and I fell in love with her. Such a misunderstood character!

Have a wonderful Mabon!

To all my Pagan, Witchy, and Wiccan friends, have a wonderful Mabon! Last Saturday we celebrated Mabon with Lynn and the members of Innana's Spiritual Center. We had a lovely ceremony at the Yoctangee park in Chillicothe. Then we had a potluck dinner with good friends and camaraderie. I was going to take pictures of our Mabon tree for this post, but alas I was wrestling a 15 lb baby the whole day and forgot.

I've saw a lot of great posts about Mabon cooking lately. From Pumpkin pies to bread, it all sounds wonderful. I think I'm just going to stick with making sloppy joes for dinner and maybe I'll make muffins or a cake today. I know I could get a lot more elaborate, but I think I'll focus on my writing. :)

So again, Happy Mabon!

One Small Step for Gay Equality

Hooray for the repeal of Don't ask Don't Tell (DADT)! If you've heard the news and are Gay and Lesbian friendly your jumping for joy (Maybe just on the inside) for an injustice righted. I have a few friends who are gay and I have to say they are the most happiest people I know because they are not denying their mind and body of what they need to be happy.

I know gay rights have a long way to go before we see equality, but this is just one more small step toward a new beginning for this country. My dream is that everyone finds their special loved one, whether they are male, female or trans gendered no one should be denied love (OR marriage) because of sexual orientation.

Its hard to understand why DADT started to begin with. So in the interest of learning, I looked it up! The U.S. Military has had a long history with using public opinion to decide who shall and shall not serve in the military. All you have to do is think about black history and we know that at one time all African Americans were barred from the military. Same with women. When public opinion starts to change, so does the laws surrounding it.

Sodomy (Defined as anal and sometimes oral between two men) has been banned in the military since the Revolutionary war. In WWII the military began psychological tests to try to identify and deny entry into the military based on sexual orientation. However when the military suffered a shortage of personnel, gays were allowed in the military. So I guess they were good to enter only when they needed bodies to catch the bullets right?!

In 1980 the DOD stated in a new policy that, "Homosexuality is incompatible with military service". DOD Directive 1332.14, January 28, 1982, Part 1, Section H. This new policy resulted in approximately 17,000 men to be discharged from service.

In 1993 President Clinton asked Secretary of Defense to come up with a policy that would end discrimination of Gays in the military. What they came up with is DADT. Gays would no longer be discharged for being gay, unless they were caught having sex (Sodomy under the law).

And now today, Tuesday, September 20th 2011, we make another historic change in the military by allowing everyone to be open about their sexual orientation. Hopefully one day, this change will spur change in public opinion. With all the hate that we have in this world, why is love made illegal? Gays are not all about sex. Gays are not sexual predators. They are simply attracted, and in love with, someone who happens to be of the same gender. There is absolutely nothing wrong with love! And I propose that it is the solution to stopping so much hate in our society.

How do your close ones feel about your witchy path? Do they know? Why or why not?

For the most part they are pretty open to my path. DH is spiritual. He doesn't claim any religion but he's studied many. He marches to his own tune so to speak. He's most close to Native American Shamanism. He's taught me a lot over the years and without him I'm sure I wouldn't be the same me today.

My mother "claims" to be Christian, but honestly I have never saw her to step foot in a church. She does believe that you don't need a church to be a good Christian, nor do you need to dress in your "Sunday" best. She doesn't know a lot about Wicca, but once in awhile she gets curious and asks. Other than that, she doesn't really live her beliefs.

My father isn't in the picture, and the rest of my family I do not have contact with. Overall we are not a very tight nit family. We couldn't be in the same room without knock down fights happening.

DH family doesn't really say much either. They are also not very religious.

A favourite candle.

My favorite candles are hand made by me! I really got into making candles years ago when a candle making company contracted my ex-boss to make a printed bottle for their candle scents. I was curious and went on their website and found a lovely supply of candle and soap making supplies. I spent that year making my own candles for personal use. I even sold a few. Christmas was candles for everyone. It was lovely. :) One of my favorites to make was a black Lily of the valley candle in a scull cast. The person I made it for loved it. :)

I made my mother a Chakra candle that has a dolphin and mermaid on it. She refuses to burn it and has it to this day.

I remember in high school our history class did a projects workshop where we made things like they would have in the Renascence. One of the things I did was dip candles out of beeswax. That was a fun project. :)

Spells are not Lifes band-aid

I'd like to spend a moment away from the 44 days of witchery to discuss spells, and why I don't share. It isn't that I'm selfish and don't want to share my hard work. Its that I believe if you are casting spells, you should know how to write your own as well as know when you should and should not use them. This means you've already studied, hopefully with another practitioner, and have learned how to create your own spells and the ethics of their use. Not that I have anything against learning from books, but I don't think it should be your only source.

Here's the thing, spells are not natures band-aid for life's troubles. If you only use spells to try to fix your life, then your no different from the people who consider themselves Christian only when they are as my mother says, "Up a shit creek without a paddle."

I don't want to make it sound like its a bad thing to turn to the Lord and Lady for help. Its certainly not. But it is when thats your only reason for doing so. Don't forget that you need to do the work associated with whatever change you wish to bring about. I think we all know it would be nice if we could get instant gratification, but it just doesn't work that way folks.

So remember, honor the God(dess), be thankful, and do the work! Not every situation is appropriate for spells. If you are in doubt, ask a friend. :)

Blessed Be,

SWC

Favourite witchy website(s).

Well I tend to stay away from most Witchy websites. I don't really know why. Years ago I joined a Pagan forum and it seemed most were really rude so I left. I guess maybe that first experience put me off of them. But I meet lots of Pagans around the net on other forums.

Some I go on Pagan forums sometimes just to check in and say hello. They are:

If you know of other Pagan sites that are friendly feel free to add them in comments.

Thanks

Your comments encourage me to keep writing! Thank you for visiting and sharing your thoughts with me.

Blessed Be,
