For those readers not in the know. Samhain (pronounced SOW-in, SAH-vin, or SAM-hayne) is the last of three harvest festivals. Its celebrated traditionally between OCT 31st and NOV 1st. It is the second time each year where the veil between worlds is thinner and we are able to communicate with our dead (The first being Beltane). It is a time to honor The Crone and our ancestors.
Sierra (My daughter) and I love to carve pumpkins for Samhain to scare away unwelcome spirits! So every year I spend at least a good day online finding exciting (and free) carving patterns. Perhaps this year instead of mutilating real pumpkins, we'll make our jack o lanterns out of paper. Or maybe we can find some other materials around the house. Anything round like a jar or ball would work. Obviously for those options we wouldn't use any heat source to light it.

As far as the Samhain ritual, we are going to join up with Inanna's Spiritual Center. I've talked Rev. Lynn to do a ritual at her center. There is a small group that wants it to happen at the center too so hopefully it will be a night of ritual and companionship. I can't wait! We are doing it on the 30th so everyone can go without our jobs (For those who have them) and school interfering.

ReplyDelete"Mutilating Pumpkins" you know, that's funny. This evening, we were carving ours and my BFF pointed out something, "I wouldn't want to come back as a pumpkin. I mean, look at what we're doing it them? Cutting them open, scooping out their guts, roasting their seeds, and carving faces into them. Then they sit outside in the chilly, wet weather and freeze or have their insides all burned out by a candle, only to rot and to thrown away." Well, this year we plan on composting ours, but she brought up interesting points. ;-)
